"Alpha Delt: Ten Years and Counting" anniversary celebration update
The Virginia Chapter's long overdue tenth anniversary celebration has been scheduled for Friday April 7 to Sunday April 9, just after our eleventh anniversary. Brother Quincy McDonald ('95) heads the committee of undergraduate and alumni brothers who are arranging the festivities. The tentative schedule of events includes a sorority mixer featuring a band, an alumni luncheon, a brother meeting and a gala black-tie dinner at the Omni Hotel where we will present our recently established Alpha Delta Phi Distinguished Alumnus Award. Anyone who has questions or is interested in helping to organize this milestone celebration should contact Brother McDonald at (804) 296-3459. We hope to see you there!
Why "Bourbon"?
Longtime readers of the Virginia Chapter's newsletter will notice that we have changed the name of our publication from "Cor Unum" to "Bourbon." We feel that this new title more accurately reflects the unique character of our house. The "Bourbons" were prominent leaders who shaped the history of the great Commonwealth of Virginia in the post-bellum era. Additionally, like many fine bourbons, our house is over ten years old and has only gotten better with age.
Samantha P. Eells Memorial Steps Dedicated
The fall '94 work week was a very productive one, which included not only vast improvements on the structure of the house, but also our crowning achievement, the construction of a new back staircase to replace the badly damaged one which had become a safety hazard. The chief architects of the staircase were brothers William Shen, Daniel Vilato, and House Chair Daniel Walmsley, who designed the steps to be much safer, sturdier, and easier to use than the previous set. Special thanks go to James Johnson, Christian Goodwin, and all of the others who helped build this necessary improvement to the house. The project has been dedicated to the memory of our dearly departed mascot Miss Samantha P. Eells, who met with an untimely demise this past summer after almost nine years as our faithful companion. A brass plaque will be placed upon the steps to honor her memory.
Note from the President
Things are looking up at the Virginia Chapter! As we prepare to return home for the holidays, we can look back on a successful semester. Our busy social schedule included band parties, sorority mixers, Aloha XXI, our Christmas semi-formal and Friday brother kegs. In addition, individual brothers have kept the fraternal spirit alive by exploring less official social activities. Also, we have done our University proud by continuing the tradition of offering spirited support for our Cavalier football team at every home game and several games at nearby rival schools.
The recently completed Fall Rush was a rousing success, and we are eagerly looking forward to another prosperous rush in the Spring. Also, our academic-literary tradition was upheld in many diverse ways. Brother James Johnson ('96) recently made a presentation to the assembled brotherhood entitled, "Trends in Contemporary Academy Award Recipients: the Best Supporting Actor". Brother Andrew McCullough's pledge period literary project, the sculpture 'Unity', is now on display in the Fayerweather Hall Art Gallery here at the University. The "Bourbon Night at the Movies" series continued with a brother pilgrimage to the Jean-Claude Van Damme contemporary classic, 'Time Cop'. When we return to school for the spring semester, we will be attending a brother retreat on January 21-22 at Oaksby Plantation, home of Christian Goodwin ('97). We will formulate plans and strategies for facing the challenges that the future presents for us as a chapter. I would like to extend each and every alumnus and brother an open invitation to come by, visit the house, and re-acquaint himself with the brotherhood.
Xaipe,
Dan Vilato ('95)

Treasurer reorganizes finances
Alpha Delt has entered the computer age! Treasurer Steve Schaeffer ('95) has organized all house budgeting and spending on Quicken and Quattro Pro for Windows, which allows the house to monitor every penny. This revolutionary change ensures his responsibility in collecting and administering our nearly $30,000 budget.

Fooz-Ball Tournament Fosters Brotherhood
On Friday, December tenth, the Virginia chapter began a new house tradition that will hopefully foster a greater sense of camaraderie among the brothers. Organized by Brother Jeff Reid ('96), the fooz-ball tourney was designed to bring the brotherhood together in an environment that is not as detached as a party and less formal than our weekly meetings. The turnout for the competition was phenomenal even due to the fact that final exams were starting the next week. "It was a good way to wind down the last week of classes and just hang out," said house elder and resident sage David Brewster ('94). The results of the double elimination tournament put Brother Bruce Russell ('97) in first place, James Johnson ('96) in second, alumni Brother Matt Harrison ('94) in third, and Brother Reid in fourth. The prizes included many different brands of adult beverage for the top four contenders, ranging from Old Grandad 100 proof to 'Shine On Georgia Moon' corn whiskey. The fooz-ball table was donated to the house at the beginning of the fall '93 semester by our alumni and has been a source of great stress relief and competition for the brothers. "I was really pleased with the turnout we got that night," said brother Kyle Hall ('97), "it's good to see all the guys come out and have a good time, especially with exams just around the corner.
New Pledge class off to running start
The five new pledges of the fall '94 class are well on their way to brotherhood. Under the watchful eyes of Pledgemasters Matt Layman ('96) and Greg Carter ('96), pledges Chris Barnes of Yorktown, VA, Brooke Rolka of San Francisco, CA, John Brammer of Salem, VA, Matt Katz of Atlanta, GA and Jamie Pollard of Lynchburg, VA have been learning the ideals of unity, dedication, and brotherhood that our house holds so dear. All brothers are more than welcome to come by and survey their progress. Initiation, tentatively planned for the spring of 1995, will be announced when they are good and ready.
A Special Thanks
We would like to offer our sincerest thanks to the brothers of the Union and Hamilton Chapters for co-hosting our annual pledge roll. Their hospitality was the very model of brotherhood. The pledge roll was a great success, despite the bad weather, which prevented a number of brothers and pledges from attending. The whole experience was beneficial to both the brotherhood and the pledges, who learned much from the interaction with brothers from other chapters.
"Her Envied Sons"
Many of our brothers have received recognition in fields ranging from academics to entertainment in recent months. These are a few of the highlights...
Brother Atul Keshap ('91) recently wed Karen Young in a service at the University Chapel. Many brothers were in attendance.
Brother Chris Decker ('94) announced his plans to wed Megan Polson, herself a Virginia alumna. The ceremony is scheduled for some time in the spring of 1995.
Brother Quincy McDonald ('96) has been called to enter the Ministry of the United Methodist Church.
Brother Rodney Webb ('93) is currently residing in New York City, and is pursuing a career in screenwriting. One of his scripts is being considered by the Geffen, Katzenberg, and Spielberg production company as an animated feature.
Brother Steven Schaeffer ('95) is currently serving on the University Union Governing Board.
Brother Louis deRosset ('95) was presented with the Corcoran Award for distinguished excellence in undergraduate Philosophy.
Brothers Brian Smith ('95), Tyler Wood ('96), and Dan Walmsley ('97) have been hard at work with the Stu-Comm 88.5 organization, which was founded in order to bring a new alternative radio station to Charlottesville. The station plans to be broadcasting in mid-1995.
Brother Dan Vilato ('95) is the bass player and principle songwriter for the highly popular local band Slackjaw. In addition to playing many fraternity parties and clubs in and around Charlottesville, Slackjaw has taken over the weekly headlining spot at Crossroads Music Club, which was formerly held by national recording artists and local favorites, the Dave Matthews Band.
Brothers Kyle Hall ('97) and David Brewster ('94) are both busy with their own band, Diet Grover, which has not only played at the chapter house, but has opened for Slackjaw at Crossroads. Their plans for next semester include more fraternity gigs, several opening and headlining shows at local clubs, and hopefully the release of a double live album sometime before the summer.
Alumni Brother Christopher Matthews ('94) has taken a job with the prestigious lobbying firm of Bergner, Beckonny, Pinky, Clough, and Brain. As well, Brother Matthews and Brother Parker King ('92) have started their own catering business which will service the northern Virginia area.
Alumni Brother Mike Rose ('92) will be returning to the University in the spring to pursue a masters degree in Russian History.
"Inside UVa" magazine has reported that alumni brother Rob Shear ('92), manager of Cavalier Computers, and two of his co-workers were named Most Successful New Management Team by Apple Computers, Inc. for the Southeast region. the award, which was presented to brother Shear on behalf of his management team, recognizes the superior sales and consumer service that the store provides. Attaboy, Rob!
Brother Steve Allen ('97) is sick and tired of being hassled by "The Man."
